Honorary medals for sale

A salesman from Canada has come under criticism for offering Falcon Medals for sale on his website, which are honorary medals given by the Icelandic state to those who further the reputation of Iceland.

“There are not many Icelandic medals; this is a small country. But the world is big and you can always find someone who is interested,” salesman Najafgholi Chalabiani, told Fréttabladid.

Chalabiani is offering 12 medals for sale; the most expensive of which is priced at ISK 700,000 (USD 10,800, EUR 7,900).

Presidential secretary Örnólfur Thorsson said he was aware that Falcon Medals had been sold on websites like eBay on earlier occasions, which he said is illegal.

“There are certain rules about the Falcon Medal and they include that if those who have been given a Falcon Medal pass away, their heirs are entitled to return it to the authority,” Thorsson explained.

Thorsson said it is difficult to determine whether the Falcon Medals for sale are genuine because there is no complete record of those who have received it and the medals are not specifically marked.
