The Italian mathematician Giancarlo Gianazza strongly believes he has found clues in Dante’s Divine Comedy that point to the elusive Holy Grail, the vessel Jesus Christ allegedly drank from at the Last Supper, being buried in the highlands of Iceland.
Gianazza and his expedition companions believe they are near to finding the Grail in the Icelandic highland wastelands. The expedition is the final part of a 13-year project which has involved on-the-ground research, as well as a mathematical analysis of Dante’s texts, as discussed in an article on the travel blog Stuck in Iceland.
The mathematician has support from a seemingly unexpected quarter: two independent filmmakers have been running a Kickstarter collection so they can tag along with the final expedition and release a documentary about it next September.
They have already been filming the documentary for 18 months and were already half way to reaching their GBP 24,000 (ISK 4.9 million) goal on Kickstarter for the final stage when the Stuck in Iceland post was written.
“What is fascinating about his research is that Gianazza doesn’t know what exactly he is looking for. He can only draw assumptions based on the historical circumstances in which Dante writes his masterpiece, hence the connection with the Templars. By following clues that he finds in the Divine Comedy, translating poetry into geographical coordinates, Gianazza got hold of a map to the unknown. The destination will only be revealed once he finally gets there,” the filmmakers say
