Scientists at the University of Iceland’s Earth Sciences Institute were feeling merry this week and in anticipation for the upcoming holidays posted the above image with a Christmas greeting on their Facebook page.
“We’ll keep an eye on the lava, but… Merry Christmas!” their greeting reads.
Someone must have realized that the shape of the new lava at Holuhraun in a map from December 17 is just like a Santa hat and completed it with a ribbon and a tassel.
The below map, based on a SENTINEL-1 image from ESA, shows that the lava field now measures 79.8 square km (30.8 square miles).
