Holuhraun Eruption Visible on Domestic Flights

Passengers on Air Iceland’s flights between Reykjavík and Egilsstaðir, East Iceland, were able to enjoy a view of the volcanic eruption in Holuhraun yesterday, as there was a clearing in the cloud cover above the eruption site.

The eruption came into view approximately ten minutes before landing in Egilsstaðir and, on the return flight, ten minutes after takeoff in East Iceland’s capital.

While attentive passengers were quick to bring out their cameras, the unique sight was not announced by the crew and no detour was made—it appeared to be a lucky coincidence that the flight route lay right across the eruption site.
