Holuhraun Crater One of Iceland’s ‘Most Beautiful’ (Photos and Video)

The 500-meter long, 70-meter high crater at Holuhraun is now among the most beautiful in Iceland, according to volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson. “We are seeing great new land formations,” Ármann Höskuldsson says. “The new crater is among the most beautiful in Iceland.”

He told visir.is that he believes that the eruption is still very powerful, even though its strength is somewhat diminished since December. The eruption has now been going on for four and a half months, since the end of August.

Rivers of lava, which can’t be seen on the surface, flow under the lava but can be detected by heat sensitive photography and in some places they come to the surface. Guðbergur Davíðsson filmed this footage during a flight over the eruption on the weekend.

The lava now covers over 84 square kilometers (32 square miles) and has flowed into the riverbed of Jökulsá glacial river. It is also starting to cover Þorvaldshraun, lava which came up in an eruption in Askja in 1926 to 1930.
