Historical Photo Exhibition in National Museum

By Iceland Review

The retrospective exhibition “The Nation, Country and Republic” of the work of photographer Vigfús Sigurgeirsson between 1928 and 1958 opened in the National Museum of Iceland last weekend.

Photographs on display include landscape photographs, photographs taken for the 1939 World Fair in New York, snapshots from the daily life of the public and images of Sigurgeirsson’s travels in Iceland with the republic’s first two presidents.

The contribution of Vigfús Sigurgeirsson (1900-1984) to Icelandic cultural history is extensive. He was one of the country’s leading photographers in the mid-20th century and a pioneer in Icelandic filmmaking.

Sigurgeirsson’s photographs received international attention and he was the first Icelander to publish a photographic book.

“The Nation, Country and Republic” will be on display until December 31.
