Hippy festival in Iceland

The sixth annual hippy festival was celebrated in the Westmann Islands last weekend. At the festival, hippies of all ages, local and foreign, convened and paid tribute to hippy culture, love and peace.

The festival featured a hippy market where festival goers could buy clothing, folk songs were sung, concerts were held and it ended with a hippy ball, RÚV reports.

Thröstur Jóhannsson, bass player of the festival’s hippy band, said: “Everyone is dressed this way. The hippy period is over, unfortunately, so we have to act.”

Festival goers and married couple Ragnheidur Arngrímsdóttir and Magnús Ólafsson attend the festival every year and claim they are real hippies living by hippy values: peace, love and happiness. Last year they renewed their vows at the festival.

“We have nine children and 11 grandchildren. I’d like to see others do better than that,” Arngrímsdóttir told RÚV.
