Higher Education Reaches Record Popularity

The deadline for applications for Icelandic universities has now passed with a record number applicants.

The largest university in Iceland, The University of Iceland, received a record 3,600 applications. This substantiates an increase of 65 percent for applications in the faculty of economics, 40 percent in the faculty of law and 30 percent in the faculty of engineering.

The number of applications for the new faculty of health science has tripled and there is also an increase in some departments under humanities like philosophy and history.

“Of course we are very happy with this development” Kristín Ingólfsdóttir, rector of the university, of Iceland told Morgunbladid

Ingólfsdóttir has no certain explanations for the increase in applicantions. “The law faculty has been improving over the years and has been promoting itself a lot, which matters.” When asked if the economic conditions could be a factor Ingólfsdóttir replied, “It could be. It’s not unheard of that the people seek out more educational opportunities when the economy is unstable or slow, but I believe that the foremost reason is the universities’ quality of education. That attracts people.”
