The northern West Fjords are currently in high danger of avalanches, according to The Icelandic Met Office.
“Unstable snow and avalanches should be expected in gullies and depressions and in leeward sides of mountains,” a warning on the Met Office website states. An avalanche occurred in Súðavíkurhlíð last night and the road has been closed since midnight. Another avalanche occurred this morning in Eyrarhlíð. Snow reached the road below but has since been cleared away.
Harpa Grímsdóttir, avalanche hazards coordinator at the Icelandic Met Office, told RÚV the danger of avalanches in populated areas is being monitored especially closely.
