Herjólfur Ferry to Sail Again Soon

It is hoped that the Westman Islands ferry, Herjólfur, will be able to resume sailing to Landeyjahöfn harbor next Saturday, mbl.is reports.

The pumping ship Perla began deepening the harbor early yesterday morning.

“Everything has turned out according to our most optimistic projections. In these first 24 hours, the ship is estimated to pump approximately 4,000 cubic meters of sand,” said Thórhildur Elín Elínardóttir, the Icelandic Maritime Administration’s publicist. “Provided we are not met with unexpected complications, the harbor should be in working condition again next Saturday.”

The ferry Herjólfur, which sails to the Westman Islands, has recently been sailing to Thórlákshöfn harbor ever since the newly inaugurated Landeyjahöfn harbor shut down due to an excess of sand and mud.
