Two disused municipal buildings at Siglufjörður Airport are set to pass into private ownership after Fjallabyggð accepted an unconditional purchase offer from tourism operator Viking Heliskiing.
The agreement covers the airport’s former terminal building and an equipment storage building for a combined purchase price of ISK 12 million. The airport itself, including the runway, will remain under municipal ownership.

- Fjallabyggð has accepted an unconditional ISK 12 million offer for two airport buildings.
- An earlier sale fell through after the municipality rejected conditions attached to the bid.
- Ownership of the airport and runway will remain with the municipality.

Previous Deal Collapsed
The offer was approved by Fjallabyggð’s town council after Viking Heliskiing submitted a revised bid without the conditions included in an earlier proposal.
The original offer required the municipality to guarantee that the buildings were structurally sound, free from leaks and mould, and resistant to water and wind. It also sought the right to deduct repair costs from the purchase price if defects were discovered after the sale.
The municipality rejected those terms, preventing the transaction from proceeding.
According to acting mayor Þórir Hákonarson, the condition of the buildings is well known and any future repairs will be the responsibility of the new owner.
The sale includes a 121.6-square-metre terminal building, constructed in 1973, and a 115.7-square-metre equipment building dating from 1981. A privately owned aircraft hangar on the airport site is unaffected by the sale.
