HeForShe Campaign: Icelandic Men Leading in Numbers

As of this afternoon, 3,019 Icelandic men have taken part in the campaign HeForShe which aims to mobilize men against the discrimination of women. The initiative was brought to life by a speech that actress Emma Watson gave on feminism at the UN Headquarters in New York on Saturday.

On the HeForShe’s website, men can now commit to the movement by signing up. The 3,513 Icelandic men who currently show their support amount to about 1.08 percent of the population. This is the highest proportion of any country, mbl.is reports. In Sweden, 3,522 men, or 0.036 percent signed up as of roughly 3 pm, in Norway 848 men or 0.017 percent support the cause, and in Finland, 420 or 0.007 percent joined.

Out of a population of 314 million in the U.S., 31,704 men, or 0.009 percent of the population, committed to HeForShe. In many other countries the numbers are even lower, for example in Russia where only 169 men out of 143 million people signed up. This amounts to only 0.000011 percent of the total population. Similar numbers are reached in Argentina with its 41.5 million people (866 men or 0.002 percent) and South Africa with its 53 million inhabitants (533 men or 0.001 percent). In Iran, 85 men or 0.00001 percent of the population are taking part.

All in all, as of 3 pm today 103,489 men around the world had signed up for the campaign in order to show solidarity with women but also to help men who no longer want to be forced to conform to male stereotypes.
