Heatwave melts Highway 1

A 2-3 kilometer stretch on Highway 1 melted due to a heatwave. Temperature of about 23 degrees melted asphalt on the section from Lækjarmót north of Víðigerdi in Húnavatna county yesterday. According to Icelandic State Radio, RÚV, the police in Blöndós asked the Icelandic Road Authority to spread gravel on to the melted highway in order to prevent accidents. It seems that the tarmac could not stand the heat.

The sunshine also affected traffic in Reykjavík. Outdoor coffee houses were jam packed and outdoor areas such as the beach in Nauthólsvík were lively.
