Head Protestor Apologizes for Comment on PM’s Illness

Representative of the Voices of the People movement, musician Hördur Torfason, launched the movement’s 16th demonstration on Saturday by apologizing for his comments about Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde’s illness.

After Haarde announced on Friday that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would therefore not run for chairman of the Independence Party in March, Torfason told mbl.is that he was surprised in the timing of the announcement, asking “Why is he bringing the spotlight to his illness now?”

According to Morgunbladid, Torfason’s comment raised considerable anger among the public and the activist was harshly criticized in the blog community.

Torfason said in his speech on Saturday that he had called the PM’s assistant to apologize for his comments. He then told his fellow demonstrators that he wished Haarde a swift recovery, also wishing Foreign Minister Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir well, who returned from sick leave on Friday.

Gísladóttir had been in Stockholm, receiving treatment for a brain tumor that was discovered in New York in September. She announced in a press conference on Friday that research had determined that the tumor was benign.

Haarde, on the other hand, has a malign growth in his esophagus and has to travel abroad for treatment.
