HB Grandi Reduces Fish Processing in Akranes

Fishing company HB Grandi has decided to dismiss the current form of land processing of cod in Akranes and give notice to its 59 employees, though 20 people will be rehired to process cod, pollock and capelin fillets through other methods.

CEO of HB Grandi Eggert Benedikt Gudmundsson said the 60,000-ton cut to the cod fishing quota, announced by the Ministry of Fisheries last fall, had forced him make this decision, adding that HB Grandi is prepared to assist its staff with finding other employment, Morgunbladid reports.

“People are shocked. They suspected the operations would be downsized, but not that every employee would be given notice,” shop steward for the workers at HB Grandi in Akranes, Jóhann Thór Sigurdsson, said.
