Hafnarfjördur women’s basketball team Haukar beat Reykjavík’s team KR 69-64 in their home grounds Ásvellir on Wednesday night. It was the first time since 2002 that a deciding odd number game had to be played in the finals in Icelandic basketball.
Haukar were in the lead during most of the game but KR refused to give up and narrowed the gap again and again. In the end, Haukar proved stronger and won the game, Fréttabladid reports.
“I have won many titles but this one is the sweetest. It is a great team to work with and the management has been fantastic all winter and has given us valuable support. I’m just thrilled on behalf of Haukar and pleased with how well the girls performed tonight,” Haukar’s coach Yngvi Gunnlaugsson told Morgunbladid.
It is the third Icelandic Championship title that Haukar has earned over the past four years.
