Fridrik Smári Björgvinsson, senior officer at the Capital Region Police investigative department, said in a statement that a closer examination of issues connected with the suspect had revealed that there wasn’t reason to send him to custody, visir.is reports.

“We are working hard on solving this case and arresting the person who killed Hannes [Thór Helgason]. The police’s investigation will continue with, among other aspects, the questioning of all of those connected with this case in one way or another,” Björgvinsson said.

Biological samples collected at the crime scene will be sent to Sweden for analysis since there are no facilities for such examination in Iceland, Björgvinsson explained. The forensic examination of the crime scene is completed for the most part.

According to visir.is, a foreign medical examiner is currently in Iceland to assist with the investigation.

Björgvinsson also said that the police are looking into numerous tips received from the public. People who might have information connected with this case are encouraged to notify the police by calling: (+354) 444-1104.
