The person who hacked into the website of Vodafone Iceland on Saturday and stole personal information about the company’s users, was likely the same person who previously attempted to hack the website of another telecommunications company and a hosting company in Iceland.

Þorleifur Jónasson, director of the technical department of Post and Telecom Administration (PTA), which operates the internet security website netöryggi.is, told visir.is that other hacks have occurred over the years but that the Vodafone case was the first serious cyber attack in Iceland because of the quantity and sensitive nature of the data compromised.
It has been revealed that not all of the data on Vodafone’s webpage was encrypted. Þorleifur said that while this would have provided the company with a much higher level of security, it is not a 100 percent guarantee. “It is never possible to completely prevent this,” he said.
