Earlier this afternoon, the words “Crazy Hacker” appeared on the web page and music played automatically on entering the site. It is not yet known who is behind the hacker pseudonym, ruv.is reports.

Director of the Directorate of Immigration Kristín Völundardóttir said in an interview with RÚV that the hacker had also struck on Tuesday but that they were working on returning the web page to normal. The website is now up and running again.

The website was reportedly among 20 web pages which were affected yesterday. Icelandic websites appear to have been the main target of the hacker on Tuesday with the websites of the Icelandic Nurses Association and Association of Municipalities in the Capital Area also down.

The police are looking into the matter.
