Gymnast of the Year Visit Young Heart Patient

Icelandic Gymnasts of the Year, Dýri Kristjánsson and Íris Mist Magnúsdóttir visited Helga Sigrídur Sigurdardóttir last week, a 12-year-old girl from Akureyri who is recovering after serious coronary thrombosis at the children’s hospital Barnaspítali Hringsins in Reykjavík. She is a gymnast too.

“It was great having them over for a visit,” Helga Sigrídur told Morgunbladid. She said practicing the sport has helped her recover. “When I fell ill I was in a good shape because of the gymnastics. Us girls always complained about having to do endurance practice but now I can sense how much it is helping me.”

“Helga has received many greetings from people she knows. This was a little different. We didn’t know each other at all but one could say that we know each other well now. We were just going to drop by but stayed for more than an hour,” Kristjánsson said.

Helga Sigrídur spent the Christmas at the hospital with her family and said the experience was good. “The most important thing is to be surrounded by your family, there will be another Christmas after this one. We got a great room and borrowed one of the hospital’s Christmas trees.”

In other gymnastics news, the Gerpla women’s team in group gymnastics, including Magnúsdóttir, which recently won the gold at the European Championship, was in its entirety named Woman of the Year by Icelandic glossy magazine Nýtt líf.
