Gylfi had two years left on his contract with German team Hoffenheim and was on loan to Swansea during the second half of last season. Tottenham reportedly paid the German team GBP 8 million (ISK 1.6 billion, USD 12.5 million).
Gylfi scored seven goals in nine games when playing with Swansea and was voted the Best Player in March.
There had been rumors of offers from several English clubs and many had thought that Gylfi would follow Brendan Rogers, the former manager of Swansea, to Liverpool.
Gylfi becomes the third Icelander to play for Tottenham. According to visir.is, Gylfi is the most expensive Icelandic player in the country’s history.
Tottenham dropped to fourth place in the English Premier League last season.
