Gylfi Sigurðsson Scores Impressive First Goal For Everton

Icelandic football player Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson proved to Everton fans last night that he was worth every penny.

Having been recently signed for a club-record fee of GBP 45 million (USD 58 million/EUR 49.4 million), Gylfi scored his debut goal in last night’s match against Croatian team Hajduk Split from an astounding 45-meter distance. Everton drew 1-1 away, resulting in a 3-1 aggregate win in the Europa League playoff round.

Speaking to evertontv after the match, Gylfi admitted he didn’t expect to score the goal from such a long distance. “But I managed to get a touch on the ball – it was sitting up quite nicely and I thought to myself, ‘the keeper is probably not on his line’… so I decided to go for it and, thankfully, it beat the keeper and hit the target.”

In his first start since pre-season, as well as his first 90 minutes, Gylfi revealed that his manager told him repeatedly that he would only be on for ten more minutes. “He must have said it three or four times. Then I looked at the clock and it said 85 minutes. But at the end, he said, ‘you needed the minutes’!”

Gylfi’s superb goal can be seen in the video below.
