The BBC’s Garth Crooks put Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson in his ‘Team of the Week’ after providing the assist for Korean central midfielder Ki Sung-yueng’s opener and scoring the winning goal for Swansea against Manchester United over the weekend.
“Swans manager Garry Monk couldn’t have thought in his wildest dreams that the two returning players would hand him a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford at the expense of Louis van Gaal. Gylfi Sigurdsson provided the assist for Ki Sung-yueng’s opener before sealing Van Gaal’s fate with a critical finish. A return of the prodigal sons?” he wrote.
The loss at Old Trafford was the first time that Manchester United has been beaten at home on the opening day of the league season since 1972.
Gylfi recently signed a four-year deal with Swansea following his switch from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premiere League in the U.K. Gylfi was on loan for four months at Swansea during the 2011-12 season, scoring seven goals in 18 appearances. The Icelander has now scored as many goals (eight) in 19 Premier League appearances for Swansea as he did in 58 matches for Tottenham.
The other players in Garth Crooks’ team of the week are: FORWARD – Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), FORWARD – Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), FORWARD – Saido Berahino (West Brom), MIDFIELDER – Craig Gardner (West Brom), MIDFIELDER – David Silva (Manchester City), DEFENDER – James Chester (Hull), DEFENDER – Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa), DEFENDER – Gael Clichy (Manchester City), DEFENDER – Eric Dier (Tottenham Hotspur) and the GOALKEEPER – Allan McGregor (Hull City).
