Group fight at Iceland’s National Hospital

A group of twenty-something men started a fight in the waiting room of the National Hospital on Saturday night. A doctor was caught up in the fight and strained his arm.

According to police the men in question were injured while fighting each other earlier in the night and had to have their injuries attended to at the hospital. Morgunbladid reports.

A police officer was working at the emergency ward tried to stop the fight, but had to call for backup. Four of the men were taken to the police station and detained for the night.

“This is totally unacceptable,” said Ófeigur Thorgeirsson, chief physician at the emergency ward at the National Hospital. He said it is rare that hospital staff is injured at work, but are constantly faced with threatening behavior.

“These [fights] are not new […], but I think people are fed up with this,” Thorgeirsson said. He does believe violence in society is increasing or becoming more brutal.
