Grounded Ship in East Iceland Towed to Harbor

Transport vessel Akrafell, which ran aground between Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður in East Iceland early on Saturday morning, could finally be floated at midnight and was towed to harbor in Eskifjörður, as ruv.is reported yesterday.

It was revealed today that the ship failed to turn and ran aground on the skerry because the steersman fell asleep. He has admitted the mistake.

Nine persons from search and rescue squads, the Reyðarfjörður fire department and Coast Guard cruiser Ægir had to be treated for smoke inhalation after working the water pumps.

There are no indications of oil having leaked into the ocean.
