Grindavík residents who have signed “loyalty agreements” with the real estate company Þórkötla will be permitted to stay in their former homes this summer, starting 28 May.
According to a statement from Þórkötla, this is a temporary pilot project intended solely for seasonal use and not as a return to permanent residence.
RÚV reports this initiative is aimed towards helping the community maintain ties to the town, which has largely been evacuated following volcanic activity that began in November 2023.
“The goal of the project is to encourage residents to maintain a connection to the town and thereby increase the likelihood that people will move back to Grindavík when it is deemed safe,” the company said.
Summer access granted
While interest from residents has grown steadily since the loyalty agreements were introduced, the company had previously deemed it unjustifiable to allow accommodation. However, following recent developments, summer access will now be granted, subject to safety and fire protection assessments.
Þórkötla has acquired 943 properties in the area and invested over ISK 71 billion. The summer trial will run until the end of September 2025. An administration fee will apply, and those eligible can apply via the company’s website.
