Grindavík Icelandic Champion in Basketball

basketballTwo teams from southwest Iceland, Grindavík and Þór from Þorlákshöfn, fought over the Icelandic Championship title in men’s basketball in their fourth final in the latter team’s home court yesterday evening.

Grindavík won the game 78-72 and the series of finals 3-1. The team has thus become Icelandic Champions in basketball for the first time in 16 years, Morgunblaðið reports.

In other sport news, KR from Reykjavík earned the Lengja Division Cup in men’s football after beating Fram, also from Reykjavík, 1-0 in the final in Kórinn, Kópavogur, on Saturday. The game’s only goal was scored by Þorsteinn Már Ragnarsson, reports.

The Lengja Division Cup in women’s football went to Breiðablik from Kópavogur after their 3-2 victory over Valur from Reykjavík in Kórinn last night.

“This is the first time I win a title and hopefully I will make a habit of it,” commented Breiðablik captain Fanndís Friðriksdóttir, who scored two goals for her team.
