Greenstone Drops Out on Data Center in Iceland

Greenstone has canceled its plans on establishing a data center in Iceland. After having scouted suitable locations across the country since 2008, Blönduós in the northwest was chosen. A declaration of intent was made with local authorities but it has since expired.

The company’s former spokesperson in Iceland, Sveinn Óskar Sigurðsson, confirmed the decision to Morgunblaðið, saying Greenstone is now working on constructing a data center in the US instead.

Sveinn said there were many reasons for Greenstone backing out of its plans in Iceland but mainly the government’s unwillingness to collaborate with the company on the data center project.

“Iceland is lagging behind because the authorities haven’t taken the natural measures to improve the environment for such an investment,” Sveinn commented.
