Prime minister Halldór Ásgrímsson says it is our duty to stand together in the fight against the forces that organize attacks such as the one that occurred in London today. He says that counter-terrorist preparations and surveillance will increase in Europe in the wake of the attacks, including Iceland.
According to Davíð Oddsson, foreign minister, there are over 2000 Icelanders living in London. As of yet, there are no news whether any Icelanders are among the deceased or injured. Eight are unaccounted for. The foreign ministry has put together a database of the Icelanders in the city and will follow up on any inquiries. Furthermore, the ministry has set up an emergency information hotline. The number is +354 545 9900.
Iceland’s president, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, is currently in London. He has witnessed the tragedy unfold and says that terrorist attacks have paralyzed the city. “The British nation has shown great courage and is resolved to deny the terrorists success in their attack on the open and free society.”
