The Icleandic government decided this morning to instruct the state counsel to file a law suit against the oil distribution companies claiming damages for price fixing, reports Morgunbladid. “The decision to sue for damages was decided by myself, the minister of justice and the minister of communications,” said Árni M. Mathiesen, minister of finance. Árni said that the state counsel would be in charge of the case against the oil companies in the courts.
“This decision is based on the findings of the Competition Committee that the oil companies engaged in illegal collusion, and it is independent of the decision of the oil companies to appeal that finding,” said Árni.
Árni said that the damages claimed would be announced when the suit is filed.
