Government Invests in LGBTQ Education and Support

Minister of Social Affairs and Equality Ásmundur Einar Daðason has signed an agreement with Daníel E. Arnarsson, executive director of the National Queer Organization of Iceland to strengthen the advisory and educational branches of the organization. RÚV reported first.

A press release on the ministry website states the goal of the new agreement is to build an accepting society and increase the visibility of LGBTQ people.

The agreement will help the National Queer Organization support LGBTQ individuals who arrive in Iceland as refugees, as well as educate immigrants on the rights of LGBTQ individuals. Other projects include providing counselling for LGBTQ individuals as well as educational services for professionals who serve the LGBTQ community. The ministry will provide ISK 12 million (USD 120,000/EUR 98,000) to realize these projects in 2018.

Ásmundur says there is a lot to be happy about in the new agreement. “I know that the education and support provided by the organization has been vital to many through the years,” he states. “We in the organization look to the future with optimism and this agreement is a big step for us and our operations.”
