Government to condemn Israeli attacks

Iceland’s Foreign Minister Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir is planning to condemn Israeli attacks on civilians in the Gaza district in a meeting with an Israeli ambassador next week.

Steingrímur J. Sigurdsson, MP for the Left-Green Movement, said yesterday that Iceland should reconsider its political relationship with countries that “perform mass assassinations of innocent people,” Fréttabladid reports.

Halldór Blöndal, head of Iceland’s Foreign Affairs Committee, does not believe the termination of political relationships between nations will solve anything.

But Blöndal added that he found the Israeli attacks on civilians “disgraceful” and that the Israeli ambassador would be “forcibly” told of the Icelandic government’s disapproval.

Eighteen Palestinians were killed in Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza district on Wednesday. According to Fréttabladid, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert blames the death of civilians on technical mistakes.
