I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto quando voglio), the debut film of Italian director Sydney Sibilia, received the Golden Puffin trophy at the 2014 Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) on Saturday as the ‘discovery of the year.’
The jury described the film as “a wild and enormously entertaining Italian comedy … [about out-of-work academics transformed into a gang of unlikely drug dealers,” as recited on riff.is.
The jury’s ‘special mention’ went to Before I Disappear, written, directed by and starring Shawn Christensen.
“This lively and ultimately life-affirming American film begins with its main character ready to commit suicide in a bathtub and takes audiences on a wild and moving adventure, blending the flavor of classic film-noir language with a fresh new storytelling voice,” the jury concluded.
RIFF, which opened on September 25, came to an end yesterday with Boyhood by director Richard Linklater as the final screening.
