Girls and Tech Event Held for High Schoolers in Akureyri

The University of Akureyri hosted the second ‘Girls and Tech’ Day for ninth grade girls from schools across North Iceland this week, RÚV reports.

Co-sponsored by the Universities of Akureyri and Reykjavík, as well as the Federation of Icelandic Industries, the Icelandic Computer Society, and LS Retail, the day-long event gave the two hundred and thirty young women who attended the opportunity to build robots, write code for their own computer games, and disassemble computers. Participants were also taken to visit tech companies in town.

“They’re really shy and reluctant at the beginning…then, as they see how things work and they start to get it, then their eyes get all wide and they have a ton of fun,” said the University of Reykjavík’s event project manager Þórunn Hilda Jónasdóttir. Last year’s event took place in Ísafjörður in the Westfjords as well as in the East Fjords. Organizers are looking into expanding the event on a national scale next year.

The Icelandic ‘Girls and Tech’ event is one of thousands of such events held around the world in honor of International Girls in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Day. According to the Girls in ICT website, “To date, over 300,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 9,000 celebrations of International Girls in ICT Day in 166 countries worldwide.”
