Girl Jumps into Ocean after Her Dad in West Iceland

A 12-year-old girl and her father were taking a trip on a Zodiac boat in Borgarfjörður, west Iceland, on Sunday evening when he fell overboard and drifted out the fjord. She couldn’t reach him from the boat so she jumped into the ocean to try to save him.

“An undercurrent hit the boat from below and he fell overboard but the boat never overturned. She tried to steer it but was unable to and so she jumped in after him in an effort to get him back into the boat. Then she drifted towards the islands. She’s a real hero,” Anna Dóra Ágústsdóttir told Morgunblaðið of her daughter.

She drifted approximately four kilometers before she reached the islets Borgareyjar. By sheer coincidence an acquaintance of the family sailed past shortly afterwards, spotted the girl and called search and rescue.

A helicopter from the Coast Guard found the girl’s father around three hours later, who had drifted ten kilometers out the fjord.

He is now being cared for at the lung ward of the national hospital Landspítali in Reykjavík and his condition is good, according to Anna Dóra.

“It is remarkable, all of it, that they drifted that far and that an acquaintance happened to sail past the girl. And of course it was vital to have the helicopter,” said Helgi Lárus Guðlaugsson, divisional manager of the Akranes search and rescue association.

The father and daughter were both wearing floatation suits. Hennig Þór Aðalmundsson of the Icelandic Coast Guard told Stöð 2 that he is certain the suits saved their lives.
