Gigantic Cats Popular Pets In Iceland

The Maine Coon breed is becoming popular among Icelandic pet owners; the Maine Coon can weigh as much as 10 to 12 kilograms and a kitten is the same size as an adult cat of a more traditional breed. Breeding in Iceland began in 2003 and they cost between ISK 100.000 and 120.000 (USD 850 or EUR 600).

The breed is one of the oldest known in North America and has been in existence since the eighteenth century in the state of Maine, on the northeastern coast of the United States.

Singer María Björk Sverrisdóttir is the proud owner of two Maine Coons, Pjakk and Píla; she told the Maine Coons are more like dogs in some ways and that they follow her wherever she goes. She plans to further establish the breed in Iceland.

The size can be cause medical complications; veterinarian Helga Finnsdóttir told Morgunbladid, the Maine Coons are more likely to suffer hip dysplasia.
