This year, there are plans to form a development company, whose goal it is to plan a harbor for large ships in Finnafjörður, Northeast Iceland, RÚV reports. The German company Bremenports has obtained an approval from Germany to continue developing the project.
The Finnafjörður project involves building a harbor for large ships, where they can also be fueled, in Finnafjörður, south of Langanes. Icelandic authorities signed a letter of intent about the project in May, along with representatives of the engineering firm EFLA, Langanes municipality, Vopnafjörður district, and the German company Bremenports, which will lead financing of the construction and provide business projects for the harbor.
Bremenports has now obtained the support of authorities in Bremen to continue developing the project full force. Elías Pétursson, director of the Langanes local council, calls this a substantial milestone, which increases the likelihood of the project being realized.
Since May, the municipalities of Langanes and Vopnafjörður have been increasing their cooperation, thus, better enabling them to take on this large task. He emphasizes that this is a long-term project and some years will go by before investors sign on, or a formal design of the harbor facilities begins.
“An authorization has just been granted to continue full force,” Elías stated.
