The police in Húsavík, Northeast Iceland, have requested that the police in Germany take a report from artist Julius von Bismarck and his colleague in connection with vandalism of natural relics in three places in Iceland. Bismarck is suspected of being responsible for spray-painting giant letters on natural relics in the Mývatn region in Northeast Iceland, including tuff ring volcano Hverfjall, which is under nature protection, as well as other places in Iceland last year.
As reported, the letters on Hverfjall, which read ‘CRATER,’ were 17 meters tall. The letters inside Karlagjá, spelling ‘CAVE,’ measured 90 centimeters. The word ‘LAVA’ was also painted onto moss south of Lake Mývatn.
Húsavík police chief superintendant Sigurður Brynjúlfsson, told ruv.is that they requested that the police in Germany take the artist’s report at the beginning of the year. He is unsure whether they have already done this as they are yet to receive a copy of the report.
In a statement sent to RÚV last year, Bismarck denied his part in the actions. However, RÚV took the statement to be an indirect confession by the artist.
