German Ambassador to Iceland Dies in Car Accident

The German Ambassador to Iceland, Dr. Karl-Ulrich Müller, died in a car accident in north Iceland.

Police, search and rescue teams and a Coast Guard helicopter were called out after Dr. Müller was reported missing on Sunday and the following day he was found dead in his car in Nordurá river near Öxnadalsheidi mountain pass, Morgunbladid reports.

Dr. Müller was appointed Ambassador to Iceland in 2007 and had previously served as a diplomat in many places, including New York and Moscow. He was married and had two children.

The cause of the accident is not clear but it appears as if Dr. Müller lost control of his vehicle and drove off the road. Police are investigating the accident.

Those who would like to pay their respects are invited to come to the German Embassy on Laufásvegur 31 in Reykjavík from January 27 to February 2, 9 am to 12 and 2 pm to 4 pm.
