Geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson stated in an interview on RÚV that the eruption scare from earlier today was probably a false alarm. It’s unlikely that an eruption in Dyngjujökull outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, northeast of Bárðarbunga volcano, has begun.
Magnús explained that there are no indications of additional glacial melt or other certain signs of an eruption. Time will tell whether the seismic activity will end with an eruption, he reasoned.
However, Magnús added it was normal for scientists to conclude earlier today, based on data from sensors, that a small eruption had started. He stressed it would have been irresponsible not to issue a warning because of such an imminent threat.
