Geir H. Haarde: People deliberately lied to me

Former Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde whom the majority of Parliamentary committee wants to prosecute under a Special court, Landsdómur says managers of large companies lied to him. In a letter to the committee Haarde said: “I have spent year in the political arena and gotten to know many people. But I have not grown accustomed to being lied to about important mater, let alone that those in charge of large companies are guilty of such behavior towards the Prime Minister. I had not experienced that until the time leading to the fall of the banks, and I did not realize that this was the case until after the fact. It is difficult to accept such behavior.”

According to Haarde says that the Investigation committee of Althingi [Iceland’s parliament] did a good job in a short time period. In all major aspects the committee did well, but it is not above criticism. He continues:

“The committee frequently talks about the so-called neglect when it discusses alleged lack of action by ministers and officials. I point out that according to law ministerial responsibility can only be considered, if he did not do some specific deed that could have prevented foreseeable danger. I want to point out that in the report there does not seem to be any suggestion that specified actions were neglected that could have prevented the chain of events from happening.”
