Gearing up for the weekend

By Iceland Review

Preparations are currently in full swing for the series of outdoor festivals being held throughout Iceland this coming long weekend. The weekend, which falls on the first weekend in August and is known as “Verslunarmannahelgi” – Iceland’s version of Labor Day Weekend – sees Icelanders leaving their homes en masse to join other revelers at any of the various events nationwide. The largest is the “Thjódhátíd” festival in the Westman Islands, lasting from Friday to Monday and which normally draws some 5,000 people. Morgunbladid online reports that island residents are currently hard at work preparing for the event, smoking puffin and baking traditional “flatkökur” or flat bread.
