Iceland’s Gay Pride festival officially gets underway today with opening ceremonies at Reykjavík’s Loftkastalinn, where the mayor of Reykjavík will address guests. Festivities will culminate in the Gay Pride parade tomorrow at 2pm on Reykjavík’s Laugavegur, ending in stage performances and celebration in the downtown core.
The Gay Pride festival began four years ago in Reykjavík, and drew a crowd of some 1,500 people. Since then it has become one of the major festivals of the summer, with an estimated 50,000 people taking part in the festivities last year.
