Davíd Gardarsson, a convicted criminal who fled Iceland in December 2005, gave himself up to the research department of the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police last week.
“I can confirm that Davíd Gardarsson has given himself up […] and the case is being investigated,” Páll Winkel, leader of the administrative department of the National Commissioner, told Fréttabladid.
According to Fréttabladid, Gardarsson was scheduled to arrive in Iceland on Friday night after being arrested in India.
On December 1, 2005, Gardarsson was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for rape by the Icelandic Supreme Court. He fled the country a few days later and has since been wanted by the Icelandic police and Interpol.
Gardarsson has been given 13 prison sentences since 1985 and has also been in prison in Germany. He is suspected of organizing a drug smuggling ring.
