Fuel Oil Leaks into Ocean off Reykjavík

It is believed that around 2,000 liters of fuel oil leaked into the ocean by Örfirisey in Reykjavík yesterday afternoon after a mistake was made when fuel was being pumped from a tank truck to the trawler Eldborg RE.

The employees of fuel distribution company Ólíudreifing, Reykjavík harbor and firefighters from the capital region worked on cleaning up the oil throughout the day. Floating booms were set up and the oil was pumped out of the ocean, Morgunbladid and visir.is report.

The fire department’s duty officer, whose name wasn’t mentioned in the story on visir.is, said the work had been successful and the weather conditions fortunate, so he was hopeful that most of the oil could be removed.
