Frosty Start to Weekend, Thaw Tomorrow

Today will be cold with a slow wind across Iceland with -5 to -10°C (23-50°F) in inhabited areas and up to -20°C (-4°F) in the highlands, as in the past few days, the Icelandic Meteorological Office predicts.

The Icelandic Road Administration reported to RÚV this morning that the roads across Breiðdalsheiði and Öxi in East Iceland are currently impassable. Roads in the region are slippery with a snow cover and visibility is limited due to snowdrifts. This is also the case in North Iceland and roads are icy in all regions.

This will presumably be the last day of quiet winter weather for now, as thaw with sleet, later rain, has been forecast for tomorrow, starting in South and West Iceland, ruv.is reports.

On Sunday there’s an outlook for a strong wind from the south with considerable rain in South and West Iceland. No precipitation has been forecast for North and East Iceland, but these regions, too, are expected to be frostless by Sunday.
