Snowfall and temperatures as low as -7°C (19°F) have been forecast for a large part of the country today. However, the weather is expected to be mostly sunny in South Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office reports. Yesterday, Icelanders celebrated the official First Day of Summer.
According to folk belief, if there’s frost in the last night before summer and summer and winter ‘freeze together,’ the summer will be good weather-wise, and that was the case in most parts of Iceland yesterday, ruv.is reports.
In his blog, meteorologist Trausti Jónsson published an overview of the minimum temperature in the last night before summer in Reykjavík in 1922-2014 and how it compared to the weather the following summer.
There was frost in the last night before summer in 33 out of 93 cases, following which the temperature was above average for 13 summers, while in 20 summers, the temperature was below average.
