The Sunday issue of daily newspaper Fréttabladid was published at 12:30 am on the election night, the cover headline stating the government had collapsed. Later the opposite was revealed, so the paper was published with a different front page at 2:30 am.
At midnight it appeared as if the coalition parties, the Independence Party (Sjálfstaedisflokkurinn) and the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkurinn), would not stay in government because the latter suffered great loss in the elections, thus the headline “Government collapses after Progressive Party’s loss.”
Two hours later the situation had changed, so Fréttabladid published a different front page at 2:30 am with the headline “As votes are tallied, parliamentary majority waxes and wanes.”
The newspaper published 103,000 issues in total and one-third thereof at 12:30, so about 30,000 families in Iceland woke up to the wrong headline Sunday morning.
