Free parking for eco-friendly cars big success

Owners of nearly 25 percent of all eco-friendly cars in Reykjavík have applied for a token that will secure them a free parking space in the capital. So many people have applied that the token supplies are running low, Fréttabladid daily reports.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

Last week, Reykjavík’s city council implemented a new parking regulation that makes eco-friendly cars, i.e. cars that consume less than 5 liters of petrol per 100 km, entitled to a free parking space. This initiative is already becoming a success because almost every fourth owner of such cars has applied for the special token to place inside the car’s window to indicate its eco-friendliness.

“I’m very pleased how well the inhabitants of Reykjavík have responded to this initiative,” says Pálmi Randversson, employee of Reykjavík’s environmental bureau. “The people of Reykjavík apparently approve of what we are doing and I hope that in the long run we will manage to affect the combination of Reykjavík’s car fleet.”
