Free bus rides for students a hit

Many more high school and university students ride the bus to school in the mornings after Reykjavík City and the Reykjavík Bus Company (Straetó) offered them free bus tickets for the first time this fall.

“It is delivering results mainly in the mornings when people are on their way to school,” managing director of Straetó Reynir Jónsson told Morgunbladid.

All buses are full in the mornings, so Straetó has added two buses to each of the most frequently traveled routes – three buses arrive at the same station at the same time.

Jónsson said some people have tried to misuse their free cards. “Each student has been given 30,000 krónur [USD 472, EUR 346]. Those who aren’t responsible enough will lose their free cards. They will not be shown any mercy.”
